北米のブランケットの全体図の写真集

タイトルに「の」が多いな。

トロントとサンフランシスコでつなげたブランケットの全体図の写真集です。とりあえず手元にある分だけ。まだブランケットつなげてるから。クッションも入れないとね。

素敵なブランケットでしょう！
ドハデですが、色んな色が入っているから何にでも合います。

日本でつなげたのも、北米でつなげたのも、これだけの色が一枚に入っていることが「One of a kind （一品モノ）」です。これだけの色を個人が独りで集めてブランケット作るのは難しい（お金と時間がかかる）。

縁編みも、ニットに詳しい人たちが試し編みして研究して話し合い、バラバラのモチーフでここまで完成度を高めることができました。

このブランケットがどんなふうにして作られたかを知っている人たちが見ると感動がひとしお。モチーフ編みに協力してくれた人、糸を寄付してくれた人、そばで様子を見ていた人たちが実物を見たら、涙の一粒も流れることでしょう。

でもそんなこと全然知らない人が「わっ！きれい！」と買ってくれて、後からこのストーリーを知ったら、すごくブランケットを大切にしてくれるんじゃないかと思います。クリスマスにこんな素敵なブランケットを誰かに贈って、家族や友人を囲んでクリスマスイブの夜に「ブランケットが出来るまで」の話をするなんて、すごく素敵な一年の締めくくりじゃないですか！？

善意とハンドメイドのゆっくりさとリサイクルの精神がフルにいかされていて、最終的にこのお金が親を失ったけれども日本の将来を担う若い世代のために使われる、というのは本当によいことだと思います。

英語で書いたものですが、トロントの11月25日のイベントに参加申し込みしたときに審査があったので、そのときに書いたストーリーをブランケットにつけて売ろうと思います。日本のブランケットを買ってくれた人にも読んでもらえるよう、ここにコピーしておきます。

—- The Blanket Story —-

We are knitting to raise money for Japan’s earthquake relief efforts. The TV images of the Tsunami captured the world’s attention and made everyone utter “Oh My God!” On reflection, I realized the relief efforts and need for assistance would continue long after the media coverage had ended. So, as a native Japanese living in Toronto, I began to ask everyone to spare a few moments to think of Japan while knitting, and asked them to crochet squares to send to me. We provided a pattern in pictorial Japanese notation, as well as an English write-up. The word about our project spread, and squares were made and sent to me from all over the world. Some knitters stepped up to collect more squares and piece them together to create a blanket. Lots of scrap yarn sitting at home, and at the back of yarn stores were brought back to life for this project. Many people crocheted squares together and eventually formed friendships. Four months later, we have received so many squares and made quite a few blankets. Each blanket has many different people’s squares with different fibers and colors. Novice crocheters learned how to crochet from us, and retired Canadian grandmothers rolled up their sleeves and challenged this Japanese pattern. In North America, this is truly a grass roots movement. In Japan, it is phenomenal, and is covered in the mainstream media and supported by celebrities. But, it all started here in Toronto…

Each blanket is the realization of a combined effort made by individuals around the world, from vastly different cultures, all of whom have come together to reach out to help Japan in its moment of crisis. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of blankets will be donated via Ashinaga Ikueikai — a non-profit organization that supports the eduction of orphans of the earthquake.
